Blockhouse Bay Library & Maker Space

DLM architects were We're engaged to do an interior retrofit of an existing school building at Blockhouse Bay Primary into Flexible Learning spaces. The building was the original school building which has stood the test of time of 100 years. It needed some major TLC to bring it over to the current building code standards including structural upgraded to the subfloor foundation and external wall framing all without disturbing the exterior.

Upon doing some initial building investigation it was discovered that over the years the building has been renovated countless times covering up the original beauty of the building that had intricate truss design, 4 metre rimu stud height and beautiful timber ceiling sarking. It was proposed to the client to reveal and incorporate as much of the original building into the renovated classroom scheme as possible.

During the design process it became apparent that this is a very special building and it needed to be enjoyed by the entire school and the Blockhouse Bay Community. The client proposed to change the use of this building from a classroom teaching space into a library makerspace.
