Te Raki Paewhenua Maori Immersion School
The project is a new Whare Kura (secondary Maori emersion school)
We were asked to design the Whare Kura as an adjunct to the existing Kura kaupapa on the same site. The predicted roll is relatively low so to provide specialized services in the circumstances is difficult so the design needed to be simple and flexible.
The design focused on 3 main features, large open plan teaching, small but multifunctional specialist space and provision of a sports facility. The design went through an exhaustive process of value management and was built in 2014. It opened to a rapturous welcome from Kura, students and staff. The ministry of educations enthusiasm for our design approach is reflected in the two subsequent Whare Kura we are working on.
